Too much sugar
Nowadays, drinking milk tea is trending, especially for teenagers. Because of its sweetness, many Filipinos are addicted to it. They consume milk tea at least once a day. With that, an endocrinologist warns the public of the dangers that milk tea could bring to one’s health.
In a TV program called “Salamat Dok”, Dr. Nemencio Nicodemus of Philippine General Hospital, explains the danger it could bring. According to him, despite the health benefits of tea and milk could bring, the amount of sugar is still higher.
A single serving contains typically five teaspoons of sugar. That’s not all, because sugar is also present in the milk and other “sinkers” of the milk tea such as pearl, tapioca and nata de coco.
According to him, a large serving usually contains 11 to 20 teaspoons of sugar which are equal to 400 calories. Based on the recommendation of the World Health Organization, the daily consumption of sugar should not go higher than six teaspoons. Too many calories could lead to excessive body fats and diabetes.
Dr. Nicodemus advised the public to limit their consumption to once a week if they cannot avoid drinking it.
