Manila, Philippines – On Wednesday, President Rodrigo Duterte revealed that Russia will donate at least 5, 000 Kalashnikov assault rifles to the Philippines.
During the groundbreaking ceremony of a housing project for the Army Scout Rangers, the president made this announcement.
“We’ll have the Kalashnikov [rifles]. It’s around 5,000. So there will be 5,000 Kalashnikov rifles… Expect the arms to come in,” He told the troops in San Miguel, Bulacan.
According to Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Russia granted donations to the Philippine government “at no coast” as effort to help it in fighting terrorism.
Lorenzana confirmed that Russia was expected to send around 5, 000 brand new riffles and 20 units of army trucks to help the country fighting the terror groups in the southern Philippines.
“The turnover of equipment and rifles will be on [October] 25, which will be held in Manila. The equipment that they would be sending are 5,000 Kalashnikov rifles and 20 units of big army trucks,” the Defense secretary said.
“That’s a grant at no cost. They want to help us to fight terrorism because they are also fighting terrorism in their country and they want to help the worldwide fight against terrorism. That’s their reason,” he added.
Russia’s gift follows the donation from China of 3,000 M4 Rifles, as well as three million rounds of ammunition and 90 sniper scopes. These rifles and ammunition were given to the Philippine National Police while sniper scopes went to the military forces.
The said tokens were all the fruit of the president Duterte’s effort to form partnerships with the arms-producing countries that are rivals to the United States.
