Online Serendipity

  • Sumo

Everyone now seems to be connected one way or another, with technology, we can reach anyone no matter how far the person is through the internet, gather any information through search engines (google) and stay connected with friends and love ones.

Serendipity is when someone finds something that they weren’t expecting to find. The word has been voted as one of the ten English words that were hardest to translate in June 2004 by a British translation company.[1] However, due to its sociological use,[citation needed] the word has been exported into many other languages.[2] In the simplest of words, it means a “happy accident“. – twiki

Surprises is not common when you are living in the Social Networking world, you can even find who are the friends of your friends (mutual contacts), or persons with the same school,  company, athletes, likes etc.. Seems like serendipity becomes more frequent than before. Some even found there significant one (boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, husband) through it. It seems that when you find someone with the same interest or birthdates as you that you can translate it as a destiny or somewhat meant for each other kind of thing, which can be funny because of our way of connecting or communicating through social network  closes the gap of telling if it is a serendipity or just plain coincidence 🙂

For example, when you just found out that you and your crush has the same birthdate, we can call that serendipty (happy accident). But if you use online search who has the same birthdate as you which is quite easy through twiki (search google), that’s a coincidence.

You can also find interesting if some of your friends are mutual with your enemies (EX :), in-laws,hehe, not so close friend, etc) you named it :D..  We are guilty sometimes to get so much close to people we haven’t even met in person or just plain online mutual online friends,lol.. but the important here is just to maintain respect which other though (don’t stalk also, 😀 )

I will not be surprised though in the future that serendipity will be very seldom and rare with all the information going around and will just be an ordinary coincidence of similar events and occurrences in this cycle of life.. cheers 🙂

oh I met a friend here like 3weeks ago, and so at the end of the day, we added each other on FB, and to my surprise, we have a lot of common friends! haha! Just sharin 😉

    • yes, I have also experienced that myself wherein people you meet are just mutual with someone you know and vice versa.. and it can be a good topic to talk about 🙂

  3. So true! Ako actually I don’t believe in Serendipity but after it happened to me, I was like.. damnit! sana noon pa ko naniwala.. hihi! Nice post =)

    • It is actually mostly in movies or teleseryes or similar to that, the situation wherein there are unexpected connections between people and can be a good plot for a love story 😀

  4. HAPPY ACCIDENT… i guess those are the perfect words to describe serendipity. i agree that it’s one of the words that is very hard to explain. 😀 hey im guilty about the stalking thing… i do that with my crushes. LOOOOOOL. nakakatuwa nga ung malalaman mong same birthday kayo noh? i remember one time when this guy I met at a party found out we have the same birthday. wala eh.. natuwa siya masyado! :))

  5. yes on these days it’s really hard to tell if it’s serendipity or coincidence. your information can be found on the net and many people can access it na. that’s ther eason why i want my info to be secured. i’ll keep that to myself so if someone happens to have the same info as mine, then it may be serendipity right? too bad, if he is not putting the right info like what i do.

    • that would be the case though.. but there will always be unknown surprises or better happy accident in one way or another, just keep it natural in approaching it 😉

  6. I like this post ^ ^ I remember the movie Serendipity 🙂
and cool~ i like the word : happy accident hihi …

    Thanks for sharin’

  7. Ever since I saw that Kate Beckinsale film, Serendipity has been in my vocabulary <3

I've always considered serendipity to be more about… circumstances than things like birth dates and such. Like finding the love of your life when you don't try to look for it. Or feel a stone in your shoe and find out it's a diamond in the rough.

    • there can be a lot of scenarios or situations we compare from it.. but it can be a positive form of accident or you term it as luck or blessings in disguise.. 😉

  8. whoa!
I thought serendipity is more on that “love” vocabulary stuff =)

  9. I reckon online serendipity is freakin’ everywhere. What with all the social networking and blogs and millions of websites out there. You don’t know what you’re going to get or who you’re going to meet!

  10. I still can’t tell serendipity and coincidence apart. Lol. Tho I say I am guilty of stalking. In a good sense. (;

I have a lot of close friends that I made through social networks, and sometimes we talk more online than off. With my current situation, I need it. Since I can’t meet up with them anymore. Haha.

  11. I’ve always known that word, since I’ve been reading books during my early teenage years. But, this is actually a good thought. It would be difficult to encounter online serendipity when all these info are already in the web. People know too much already. But maybe, for some people that are just starting out here on the www, then there’s a huge chance they’ll experience a happy accident. 🙂

    • Maybe too much information is publicize or people are just not keeping secrets anymore especially offline which can already be predictable at times and thus minimize surprises XD

  12. I used to rely on serendipitious events but then later on in life I learned to be more careful… Some signs had a very fatal following and curiosity killed me. But happy accidents are always welcome, I think, for as long as it does not endanger a person in any way. 😀

  13. Through these various studies, the big companies have found out that African-American consumerism is on the rise.
More advanced methods are required to draw people to your website and these include things such as blogging, Facebook, Linked-in and other progressive marketing strategies that use the latest advances.
Just as pay per click may work for some business owners, but
unless you are getting huge amounts of traffic, the payoff
    is usually nominal.

  14. I really don’t think I would ever be able to keep up with running a site like it!
Magnificent piece of work and I just hope you keep up with it.

  15. My brother indicated I will like that internet site. He / she once was fully appropriate. This specific upload truly produced my time. You can’t visualize how so much time I had put together expended with this details! Many thanks!
